Lyon has had many faces during its 2,000-year history. From Roman capital of Gaul to silk capital of Europe to present-day gastronomic capital of France, the city has long been a leader of the times. What is now the country—s second largest metropolitan area still retains an historic city centre framed by two hills—Fourviére and Croix-Rousse. It was on Fourviére that Lyon was first founded as a Roman colony in 43 BC and its ancient theatre and Odeun still stand. Vieux Lyon and the slopes of Croix-Rousse house the city—s silk district and one of Europe—s largest Renaissance quarters. The quarter—filled with classical Florentine architecture and charming covered passageways called traboules—exemplifies Lyon at its height during the 17th and 18th centuries when the city supplied Europe—s elite with textiles woven by its Canuts silk workers.

The city—s remarkable history has designated it a UNESCO World Heritage Site but today, Lyon blends contemporary culture with its prestigious past. High-speed TGV trains connect it with Paris and Marseille, gigantic outdoor frescos—including the Canuts Mural—adorn its city buildings, and international business convenes in innovative, 21st century structures. But it is for its cuisine that the city is most well known. Considered the culinary destination in France, Lyon is home to top-rated Michelin chefs, luxurious gourmet restaurants and humble bouchon bistros—all of which tantalize the taste buds with the Rhone Valley—s best cheeses, produce, regional pork specialties and, above all, carafes of Beaujolais wine.
