Lyon Districts & Neighbourhoods

Croix Rousse + My Favorites
The Croix Rousse is also known to the Lyonnaise as 'the hill that works', and indeed it teems with shops, markets and avante-garde residents. In this neighbourhood in 1805, weavers began building shops to accommodate the new, mechanical Jacquard weaving loom and began creating some of the finest silks in the world. Although weaving is no longer Lyon's most lucrative industry, its traditions and history are palpable throughout the Croix Rousse. Address: Croix Rousse | Lyon, Rhone Valley
Vieux Lyon + My Favorites
Located at the foot of the Fourviere Hill, Vieux Lyon encompasses the districts of St-Jean, St-Paul and St-Georges. The narrow, cobblestone streets are lined with more than 300 medieval and Renaissance homes, all restored to their initial states of dignity. Meander along Rue de Boeuf, Rue St-Jean and Rue des Trois Maries for beautiful historic buildings, and homes along Rue Juiverie retain their gargoyles carved, grotesque figures used to divert water away from gutters.
