    Notre-Dame de Fourviere Basilica

Located on the top of the Fourvière hill, the Fourvière basilica was built in the late 19th century in honour of the Virgin Mary, the city's patron saint, and as a gift to the citizens of Lyon for their sacrifices during the Franco-Prussian War. From the terrace are spectacular views of the city. It is a fanciful building, replete with arches, spires, marble and mosaics.

    Fourviere Hill

Romans climbed the Fourviere Hill to build a city called Lugdunum, of which an ancient amphitheatre and unique odeum remain. From the 6th century on, a number of religious monuments have been placed on the slopes, earning it the nickname 'the praying hill'. Modern additions include the Basilique Notre Dame and the Tour Metallique, a metal tower that acts as an antennae and is the highest point in Lyon.

    Saint-Jean Cathedral (Primatiale St-Jean)
Built between the 12th and 15th centuries, Saint-Jean Cathedral is the highlight of the Old-Lyon district. Inside, the intricate Gothic chapel's portals bear medallions depicting the life of the martyr. A true treasure is the 16th century astronomical clock, one of the oldest in France. Several times throughout the afternoon the clock announces the hour in fine fashion, with a rooster crowing and angels trumpeting.
