Place des Terreaux Created in the 17th century to host markets and public executions, the place des Terreaux is one of Lyon's most famous gathering places. In the centre sits a 19th century fountain that required 21 tonnes of lead to complete, and was sculpted by Frederic-Auguste Bartholdi, the same person responsible for the Statue of Liberty.
